Kaleidoscope

"Love doesn’t just hold. Love liberates." - Maya Angelou

  • Medium : Acrylic, Marker

  • Date : 2017

  • Original Size: 8” x 10”

Loosely inspired from Damien Hirst’s butterfly mandalas. A group of butterflies is officially called a kaleidoscope, which is a fun fact that I just love.

To me, butterflies represent transformation, rebirth, and faith. Not to use those words as decorative platitudes, but in earnest. Right after a caterpillar enters the cocoon, it first must become liquid. Each cell rearranges itself into a butterfly. At some point, if the caterpillar were conscious and said “Oh God, I’m losing myself, I’m dying — stop changing!” it would never have the chance to be something completely different and free. I like that metaphor for us. To have faith in our transformations; to know that eventually it all leads to liberation.

In this piece, there are of course, underlying tones of motherhood, creation, and unconditional love. I invite you to search your own heart for those conclusions.
