Paradiso
“Open thy mind; take in what I explain and keep it there; because to understand is not to know.” - Dante Alighieri
Medium : Acrylic
Date : 2018
Original Size: 36” x 48”
This painting was commissioned, and the prompt was to paint a tropical scene. This was the largest commission I had ever made at the time. I was pretty terrified the entire time I made it, which is hilarious considering how serene and peaceful the subject matter is. I thought I never wanted to take another commission again, but by the time it was over, I found it satisfying.
I was able to find peace once I let go of the expectations and remembered “It’s just a painting.” You cannot think creatively when you are in fear. You will not be able to make good art if you are so focused on pleasing everyone. I figured I would do my best, and if changes are need, I’ll only know until I finish the first draft.
And of course, when I finished the painting, the commissioner said “Look great.” And paid me right away. No further complaints or comments. Great lesson for any beginner artist.
