Obsidian

“I still keep all those love letters in the crevice of his smile.”

Illustrated for a soon-to-be released poetry book. Created from charcoal on paper, the figure looks as though she is covered in bitter ash. Her expression, heartbroken and slightly disassociated. Her face looks almost swollen, as though she’s been hit. However, let that stand as only one interpretation on how she looks and feels. She could also be tired or shrugging in acceptance. Allow your own judgments on her emotion to be the focus on the piece, rather than my intention.

I made this piece about the duality of love and heartbreak. Sometimes we find that ones we love the most, has most power to inflict pain over us. The pendulum swings from hate and adoration in unconscious relationships.

The heat and passion of lava leaving so quickly gives birth to the dark and sharp obsidian.
