Breathe

“What’s something you wish your parents had told you?"

I created this piece for Kevin Ly’s project “Letters to Parents.” I met Kev in college during our Art in Public Spaces class. We worked on a few projects together. For his final project, he sat outside the FA4 Art building with a desk, colored pieces of paper, and a bright orange mailbox. Students would approach him and wrote their answer to the question “What’s something you wish your parents had told you?”

After such a beautiful, heartbreaking, and positive outpour of responses, Kevin Ly decided to publish these pieces in a book, and showcase the work in various exhibitions in LA. He approached me and asked if I could make an illustration based off of any of the responses I found compelling. I asked him if I could make 3.

This piece was inspired by the letter that read:

"That everything is okay. All these "things" that are happening aren't important. Breathe. Focus on yourself. Breathe Breath Breathe Breathe”
